Fuel Handling System

Fuel handling machines are used to load and unload the reactor core as well as transport the fuel elements in the reactor pond.

The fuel elements are always handled by a purpose-built high-grade steel grab that is built into a high-grade steel telescopic mast.


Via the redundant charging machine safety hoist (e.g. in accordance with KTA 3902.4.4, highest safety category, with load drop prevention) the functions of the grab and telescopic mast are redundantly activated with safety monitoring.

In principle, we make a distinction between two types of fuel charging machines for the respective reactor types boiling water and pressurized water reactors.

In this connection, NKM Noell Special Cranes has developed and puts in use purpose-built monitoring systems.


The e-control plant with redundant memory programmable control system is arranged on the FE handling machine trolley.

Operation takes place by means of various control consoles with diverse visualisations manually, semi-automatically or fully automatically in each case with the necessary safety-monitored control steps.
